It's certainly a nice feeling to have helped someone gain more insight into their OWN idea. On the flip side, your example provided exactly a concrete example of MY idea - that of tracking the tritones. Your example made them easy to spot, but in other arrangements, they are still there, and spottin...

By the way, I caught that tritone sub you added at the end - turning C7 into Gb7. Leaving the 4th chord in place for that makes for an "out" sound - a #4, a #5, and a b9 - all tritone counterparts to their original home in the C7. Vive les tritones.

This example is cool. It is easy to underestimate the thinking behind this approach, since it sounds so simple (due to the lack of movement in the RH). However, there are only three notes that COULD be played over all three chords and still leave the functional notes (the tritone) in the LH. At it's...

Not really. The reason I want to see if there is a distinction is this: Put the 12 tones of equal temperament in a row spaced by fifths, 1 through 12. Numbers 1 through 7 are the 7TO, a Lydian scale. Tones 8 through 12 are the "outgoing" tones. In Russell's "Lydian Chromatic Scale&quo...

Thank you for trying to find some validity to my ideas. I'm really impressed at your approach to finding some reason that a resolution to C would work, even if it's only the root, and not the chord quality that attracts a resolution. Something similar happens with the Lydian Diminished scale, whose ...

I did some experimenting with this and realized a few things. For one thing, AMG's are not really intended to provide alternate resolution paths to the CMG's. They place a chord in a more outgoing tonal environment, which is primarily a vertical consideration. That being said, the resolution possibi...

Yeah, sorry motherlode, for hijacking your thread! ALL of these threads are related to some degree or another.... It's just that the circle of fifths, so fundamental to the concept, and all the insight and perspective it affords us (especially in "out-there" stuff like Giant Steps) is univ...

I have my guitar student (an absolute beginner) use the cycle of fifths to create a chart of all the key signatures. I have him recreate it from scratch from time to time. I don't let him play scales up to speed until he first works out the key signature and names all the notes on the spot. He's bec...

Yeah, I've mentioned that diagram several times in the Forum. I didn't know that was Coltrane's.

No, he doesn't.

Tonicization is obviously a horizontal concept. Russell uses the Giant Steps solo on pg 95-98 to demonstrate VTG in use, but also points out the horizontal relevance of the tonic stations that are resolved to via the 7th chords. At this point in the book, CMG's have not been discussed yet, so Russel...

http://www.georgerussell.com/ It's on the title page of the 2001 edition, but also appears on George's web site. Book two will be all over it I'm sure. I'm not suggesting a geometrical approach to music (although there are definitely "parallels" that can be "drawn" - pardon the p...
