Re: Hello and another kind of Chart
"With regards to the LCC, it only has a few scales, used in uncommon ways. It's intervals that propagate melody, not scales. Scales are merely depositories for intervals." ML that's nice. When I studied with George and Ben they talked about creating your own 'official' scales. All that is ...

JazzEd interview with Jamey
I don't think it's a mystery that George Russell's work is the fountain from which much of current jazz pedagogy springs from. Personally I feel that every time the story gets retold it loses some of the magic of the original voice. I also don't think the jazz education has to come from George's wor...

Re: Just Intonation
Even though the Concept is about the chromatic world in equal temperament I don't see why a piece composed using the LCC couldn't be performed using just intonation. The main issue would be finding performers that could handle playing the harmonically pure chords. I don't believe just intonation is ...

Re: Allan Holdsworth
I love Holdworth's playing. I met him in 1983 and found him to be one of the most self-deprecating people I've ever met. It would be interesting if he were influenced by George Russell. It has been documented in interviews with people that used to play with him, that he used to woodshed with Nicolas...

Re: Uberbill's questions
I think George's idea about the Western Order of Tonal Gravity being about the various notes propagating chords is primary. This doesn't deny what you are noting is true. I think it good to understand where he was coming from and not try to read too much extra into it.

Re: Uberbill's questions
The skipped fifth seems to really throw people for a curve. Vertical Tonal Gravity concerns itself with chordscale unity. The author establishes a continuity by introducing all 12 tones in an order that represents their ability to spawn various chord types, based on an inside/outside continuum. If y...

Re: "The Story of an American Composer"
I can't wait to read that book. I knew about George's interest in Gurdjieff after attending the seminar in the '80's. If you look at the new edition you'll find Gurdjieff's influence present , especially in the last few pages.

Re: Chord Function In The LCCOTO?
[quote="ThomGaetano"]Motherlode, One thing that I noticed, however, is that on the "Close To Distant" chart in Russell's book, he skips the interval of a perfect 5th that takes place after the +IV (In the book the starting note is F; once the chart reaches B, it skips F# and goes...

Re: Chord Function In The LCCOTO?
It would be good to know which edition of the LCC the OP has been reading. Also, I thought that the Berklee Chord Scale method was essentially their method of dealing with vertical tonal gravity, more or less and didn't include functional harmony. Shows you what I know! Any book on functional harmon...

A few points:
1. The Concept isn't something you believe in or don't believe in. The phrase 'believe in' has actually been used on the forum. It's something you find useful or don't. 2. The Concept doesn't need to be defended. As Ben pointed out to me when I attended the LCC workshop in '88, 'everybody has a conc...
