I'm so pleased to see this forum come back to life gain – with this thread. As some people know, my interest in the Concept (and I did get to it through "loving the music") is as a philosophy (not a system) which applies beyond sound. Volume 2, even if it's not released immediately, may ...

Another "great pianist" who was influenced by the Concept is Gil Goldstein. See the interview with George Russell in his "Jazz Composers Companion".
Also see this interview with David Baker about the seminal Lenox School of Jazz: http://www.iaje.org/article.asp?ArticleID=106

Expanding on the list of musicians who use the Concept today, you'd have to include all of George Russell's bands. Here's the personnel of the Living Time Orchestra from "The 80th Birthday Concert" in 2003: Stuart Brooks, Stanton Davis, Palle Mikkelborg: trumpet; Dave Bargeron: trombone; R...

You'd probably need to hunt around record stores for the actual CD. That's where I got mine. It's the album with both Bill Evans and Paul Bley on piano. Bley talks quite extensively about the session in his book Time Will Tell. It's an interesting album. And the music is still available on iTunes. Bob

beijing, spam and the lost forum

beijing: on a scale of 1 to 12, beijing gets a 1 for available teachers of the lcc, and a 12 for the fact that there is no major scale in chinese music - perhaps because it was not created for the piano. spam: before i left in october i made a suggestion on the "music players" "keyboa...

Just another dumb note to say I'm glad the Phentermines have left.

Now I don't have to make that joke about the Concept being Phat.

I just want to echo and really applaud 2 of Sandy's comments here: First the Derek Bailey book! It's one of the very few pieces of music literature dealing with the idea and breadth of improvisation as a concept. Also do check out Bailey's album Standards. People often find his music relatively &quo...
