Rather than supposing we are "imposing" a horizontal scale over an otherwise vertical structure, maybe we should just call the Major Scale an 11TO scale, noting that it possesses the horizontal forces or tendencies.
In a vertical situation that is exactl...

I ran into Oliver Nelson Jr. at a gig this week. What a nice man! Reminds me that the ascending descending section( starting in the 9th bar of the head) of Stolen Moments had some great RF.

OK I’m on the same page with you. He didn’t abandon the I. As a matter of fact, it’s staring us in the face. The I is the big letter in the middle of each circle, the Lydian Tonic. I think you have to look at those Roman numerals differently than if you were looking at an analysis of a piece u...

That’s it. Thank you! The exact three chords start at 12 seconds. I have ‘jazzheimers’ and had remembered the changes in the wrong key in my initial post about this. The key is Ab. The chord in question is a Dmin7b5. Over this chord he plays Fmimaj7, Gmi7b5, Abmaj7#5. The following change is a...
Minor/Major 7th How do you all treat this chord? I personally would put it on the position (I) for an ingoing habitat. -Therefore it would be a chord in relation to 9-Tonal order. Figured I would ask since it has a big relation to the harmonic minor scale. I also didn't se...
I do, however, think it's just too coincidental that the so-called "horizontal scales" (most notably Major, Major Flat Seventh, and Major Augmented Fifth) happen to be the same scales as the modes that are considered CMG's.
What a great observation! I'm...
In your opinion, would V7 chords in Classical repertoire generally be treated as representing mode III of the Major Augmented Fifth scale, or as mode II of a LC scale one step in the flat direction of the circle of fifths? EG: A minor key. (Mode VI of C LC scale) "Dom...
